Hands-On: How to Approach Setting Up Upsell Flows
Updated over a week ago

Upsell flows are a powerful feature in EliteCart that can significantly boost your store's average order value and customer satisfaction. By offering complementary or related products during the checkout process, you can encourage customers to add additional items to their cart, ultimately increasing your revenue and profits. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of setting up effective upsell flows.

1. Choosing the Right Upsell Trigger

The first step in creating an upsell flow is to determine the trigger that will display the upsell products to your customers. EliteCart offers four options:

  • All Products

  • Collections

  • Products

  • Product Variants

Start Simple with Collections

To start off, it's recommended to start with collections as your upsell trigger. This approach is straightforward and allows you to target a broad range of customers based on the products they've already added to their cart. For example, if you have a collection dedicated to a specific category (e.g., "Men's Sneakers"), you can set up an upsell flow that triggers when a customer adds any product from that collection to their cart.

Get More Specific with Products or Variants

You can consider setting up more specific upsell triggers based on individual products or even product variants. For instance, if you sell phone cases, you could create an upsell flow that triggers when a customer adds a specific phone model to their cart, offering complementary cases or screen protectors for that particular model.

However, it's essential to strike a balance between specificity and potential reach. While highly targeted upsells can be hyper-effective, they may also limit the number of customers who see the offer.

Also, keep in mind that many combinations can nicely be achieved with smart collections. E.g. you could create a smart collection called "white men's sneakers" with conditions to match respective product, e.g.

  • product name must contain "white"

  • product category must be "sneaker"

  • tag must include "men".

2. Choosing the Right Upsell Products

Once you've determined the upsell trigger, the next step is to select the products you want to offer as upsells.

When to Choose Products with All Variants

If you're offering a product that comes in multiple variations (e.g., colors, sizes), it's generally recommended to select the product and include all its variants in the upsell flow. This approach ensures that customers see all relevant options. For example, if a customer adds a t-shirt to their cart, you could offer them a matching pair of shorts as an upsell, displaying all available sizes and colors for the shorts. EliteCart will automatically display a convenient and accessible variant chooser within the cart.

Tip: Activate EliteAI™ Smart Match to avoid suggesting products that are unavailable in the customer's size. You can read more about that here.

When to Choose Specific Variants

In some cases, it may be more appropriate to offer specific variants as upsells. This approach can be particularly useful when you want to highlight a particular variation or when the variants have distinct features or use cases.

For instance, if you sell phone cases with built-in wallets or kickstands, you could create one upsell product for each of these two variants and display them in a gallery next to each other, allowing customers to choose the specific feature they're interested in right from the cart.

By following these guidelines and experimenting with different upsell triggers and product combinations, you can create compelling upsell flows that enhance the customer experience while driving higher conversions and revenue for your store
