Percentage-based addons (e.g. insurances)

Learn how to create percentage-based addons like shipping protection

Shipping Insurance

Add percentage-based products like shipping insurance to increase order value and customer confidence.

Unlike normal addons, which have a fixed price, the insurance addon allows you to charge for services as a percentage of the cart total. EliteCart automatically manages the product pricing based on cart value, creating a seamless cart and checkout experience.

EliteCart does not provide actual insurance or shipping protection services. This feature creates a product that allows you to charge for services that you or a third party may provide.

Setting up insurance

  1. Navigate to Cart Designer → Add-ons

  2. Enable Addon 1 or Addon 2

  3. Select Insurance (% of sales)

  4. Click Grant permission if prompted

  5. Enter a product title (e.g., "Shipping Protection")

  6. Click Create product

The product is automatically:

  • Published to your store

  • Hidden from store search and SEO

  • Configured with 100 price variants

Configuration options

Percentage setting

Set the insurance cost as a percentage of cart total (e.g., 1%, 3%, or 10%).

Cart total calculation

  • Use pre-discounted cart total: Calculate based on prices before any discounts are applied

  • Include gift cards in cart total: Include gift cards in the calculation

  • Include digital products in cart total: Include digital items in the calculation

Styling options (same as normal Add-ons)

  • Main style: Choose between Minimal or Image display

  • Button style: Select Round, Square, or Switch style

Text customization (same as normal Add-ons)

  • Use {title} and {price} variables in the title field

  • Add an optional description to explain the service

  • Fully translatable through your language settings

How it works

EliteCart creates a product with 100 variants at different price points. When the cart total changes, the system automatically selects the closest variant to match your configured percentage. This ensures compatibility with Shopify checkout while maintaining accurate pricing.

For technical reasons (using variants in the background), the percentage is not accurate, but rounded to the next variant’s price.

Standard variant pricing structure

  • For most currencies (e.g. USD, EUR, GBP), the insurance starts at $0.98 (or €0.98 etc). The next increment is $1.98 and so on.

  • High-value currencies (e.g. SEK, NOK, JPY), starts at 9.8SEK and increment from there.

Customizing the insurance product

After creation, you can edit the product directly in Shopify:

  • Change the product image/icon

  • Modify the title and description

  • Translate using your preferred translation app

  • Adjust variant prices if needed

  • Configure multi-currency pricing (otherwise prices are auto-converted at the current Shopify conversion rate)

Alternative use cases

This feature works for any percentage-based addon:

  • Express shipping fees

  • Priority handling charges

  • Gift wrapping services

  • Environmental offset contributions

  • Donation add-ons

Important notes

  • Only one insurance addon can be active at a time (although you can use it next to a normal addon)

  • The product may appear in automatic collections after creation - you must manually exclude if needed

  • Customers see the addon as a regular product in checkout

  • The variant swapping happens automatically in the background

  • The percentage isn't exact due to the stepped pricing structure

Tips

  • Set a reasonable percentage (1-5%) to maintain conversion rates

  • Use clear, trustworthy language in your title and description

  • Consider offering insurance only on higher-value carts

  • Test different percentages to find the optimal balance

  • Monitor acceptance rates through EliteCart analytics
